La Dolce Vita - Another weekend in Roma

Buon Giorno,

Just a quick fill in on what I did this past weekend around Rome.

Friday night, Jessica, Courtney, Sophia, and I went to a restaurant called Vinando – Father Bohr turned us on to it. It is hidden behind the Vittoriano and it turned out to be one of the best meals we’ve had so far! It also gave Court, Soph and I the opportunity to test how much we’d learned from our wine tasting in class. We tried a bottle of Valpolicella from the Veneto region, and liked it so much we got a second! Collectively, we had stuffed pumpkin flowers, mozzarella con proscuitto, handmade ravioli, risotto in red wine…the list goes on and on. Super delicious. Of course, we then wanted gelato from Frigidarium! And afterwards, we ended up heading to Abbey Theatre to meet up with the rest of our friends.

I let myself sleep-in the following morning, and then a group of us headed to Aventine hill (Aventino) to check out the Knights of Malta “keyhole.” I now know why the view on the other side is such a big deal! The fact that no one is allowed inside also adds a little extra to the experience. There is a park on Aventine that gives panoramic views of the city, so we spent some time there, and then found a little shortcut down to the river.

On our way to the Vittoriano, we stuck our hands in The Mouth of Truth (La Bocca di Verita). You may know it from the movie “Roman Holiday.” Then we hopped a bus up to the wedding cake, and rode the blue glass elevator up to the top. It is in the prime location. You can see the entire city, even our hill where we live! It gives you a bird’s eye view of the major sites, and you can find some of your own personal favorites.

We grabbed lunch at Miscellenea’s by the Pantheon and then headed home. We’d missed Mensa, so we grabbed Chinese food for dinner, oddly enough.

Sunday was the big rivalry game: Roma versus Lazio! You are born into one team or the other, and Romans have a passion for their family’s team unlike anything you could ever imagine. I wore my Roma jersey downtown (did a little shopping for Paris), and that was an interesting experience. I’ve never had so many people stare at me! My bus stop just so happens to be very close to the stadium, so carloads of people stared, cheered, asked what the score was…it was pretty crazy.

Sunday night, I worked on a presentation, relaxed, and finally feel caught up on things.

Paris here I come!

Ciao ciao,

Brianna
